A recent Milwaukee Journal article reported that "Voters overwhelmingly rejected a referendum that would have raised taxes." According to the article, the vote was 57% "No", 43% "Yes". When the school lunch referendum in Manitowoc passed with a 56% "Yes" vote, the Herald Times Reporter article described the margin as "close"!
So a 56% margin is "close" when the voters authorize raising taxes, while a 57% margin is "overwhelming" when the voters reject raising taxes. Apparently that one percent is crucial!
